ROCK ISLAND – To increase construction and building trades’ diversity and expand the talent pipeline in the 36th District, State Senator Mike Halpin is urging local, community-based organizations to apply for the Illinois Works Pre-Apprenticeship Program’s most recent round of funding.
“Pre-apprenticeship programs are a wonderful resource for young adults looking to work in the construction industry,” said Halpin (D-Rock Island). “With the funding received from the Illinois Works venture, pre-apprenticeship programs can train more residents looking for a future profession, setting them up for rewarding, successful careers in the trades.”
The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity created the Illinois Works Pre-Apprenticeship Program in 2021, with the aim of boosting access to apprenticeship programs and building a more diverse pool of candidates. These comprehensive programs assist participants in receiving admission to apprenticeship programs, which affords graduates a greater opportunity of beginning a long-term trade career. Since its inception, Illinois Works has provided community-based organizations with more than $70 million, helping to serve over 7,000 Illinois residents.
Participants in the pre-apprenticeship programs attend without owing tuition, and they are given a stipend and other supportive barrier reduction services to help their start in the construction industry. Upon completing the program, pre-apprentices receive industry-aligned certifications, which prepare and qualify them to continue at a registered apprenticeship trade program.
“The Illinois Works Pre-Apprenticeship Program is a great example of how the state prioritizes investments in our world-class workforce,” said DCEO Director Kristin Richards. “Through this program, we are continuing to create a diverse pipeline of talent ensuring Illinois continues to be a leader in the construction trades.”
Eligible applicants include nonprofit, community-based organizations, such as industry associations, chambers of commerce, local workforce areas, community colleges, technical schools and school districts.
